Types of ice skates

Ice skating is divided into figure skating, ice hockey, and speed skating. Therefore, different skates should be equipped with different blades depending on the sport. To choose a suitable pair of skates, you first need to determine which type of skating you want. Different sports use different blades and skates, so you need to understand the characteristics of each sport and its various blades and skates:

Figure Skates
1. Figure Skates: These are figure skating blades. They have protruding teeth at the tip and glide on the same principle as walking. Figure skating involves difficult movements and requires high stability, so the skates have a stiff and high waist to protect the ankle joint. The blades are wide with grooves in the middle and have a large curvature to facilitate small-radius turns, spins, and footwork. The blades also have serrations at the tip for takeoff, landing, and braking during spins. Beginners generally choose figure skating skates.

2. Hockey Blades: These are ice hockey blades with smooth blades. Ice hockey is a highly competitive sport requiring excellent protective measures. Therefore, ice hockey skates have a stiff toe box, a high midfoot, and a thick upper. The blades are short with a large arc to allow skaters to move flexibly and change direction on the ice.

3. Speed Skates: Speed skating blades are longer than regular blades (hockey blades, figure skates). The main characteristic of speed skating is high speed, so speed skating blades are long, narrow, and relatively flat, resulting in a large push-off area and low friction. The low midfoot helps lower the skater's center of gravity and reduce air resistance.

Modern speed skating blades are further divided into short track speed skating blades and long track speed skating blades. Short track speed skating blades are slightly shorter and have a larger arc than long track speed skating blades, with a higher blade post (the rigid connection between the blade and the skate sole) to accommodate the small turning radius and numerous curves of short track speed skating.

Figure skating skates, also known as roller skates, are equipment used in roller skating.

Roller skates are classified into inline skates and quad skates based on the position of the wheels.

Inline skates are made of leather, plastic, etc. The boot height reaches above the ankle, with a hard upper, a slightly high heel, and a sturdy sole.

The frame is made of metal or hard engineering plastic, with the front and rear wheel axles slightly higher than the middle wheel axle, creating a slight curve along the lower edge of the wheels to facilitate turning and gliding. A brake can be installed on the rear wheel, and its distance from the ground can be adjusted. The frame is connected to the sole with rubber pads and secured with bolts.

Quad skates have four wheels arranged at the four corners of the skate. The front two wheels share an axle mounted on a flexible bracket, allowing the front wheel axle to deflect at a certain angle for easier turning.
